Where the space actually goes

The clean up order that frees the most
Work down this list and stop when you have enough room. Each step is reversible until the last two.

- Remove offline downloads. Podcasts that already played, downloaded shows, offline maps, offline music. This is the best gigabyte per second of effort available.
- Sort photos by size and watch the videos. Screen recordings, accidental clips, the twelve takes of the same thing. Delete the ones you would not miss, then empty the deleted album again.
- Deal with old message threads. Group chats accumulate years of images and video. Both platforms let you set messages to auto delete after a year or thirty days, which fixes the problem permanently rather than today.
- Offload or archive apps you do not use. Both platforms have a feature that removes the app itself but keeps its documents and settings, so reinstalling puts you back where you were. Games are the ones worth targeting.

The photo deletion trap
This is where people lose things, so it is worth being precise. A synced photo library is not a backup. It is a mirror. When your phone photos sync to a cloud service, the phone and the cloud show the same library, and deleting a photo on the phone deletes it from the cloud and from every other device signed in.
The way to free space in a synced library is never the delete button. It is the option with a name like optimize storage or free up space, which leaves a small preview on the phone and keeps the full resolution original in the cloud. The library still looks complete. Two consequences follow. First, if that option is on, your phone no longer holds full quality originals, so the phone cannot serve as your only copy of anything. That reserve is not waste. Habits that stop it filling again
Set the camera to a sensible resolution. Most people record at the highest setting the phone offers and watch the result on a phone screen. Dropping from 4K at 60 frames to 4K at 30, or to 1080p for casual clips, roughly halves or quarters the file size with no difference you will notice in a message thread.
