The laptop buying checklist that survives the marketing
The specifications that change daily use, the ones that do not, and the questions to answer before reading a single review.
The short answer
- Decide your heaviest weekly task, how often you carry the machine, how long you will keep it and any software that only runs on one platform, before you compare any models.
- Spend on the parts that cannot be changed later: screen, keyboard, trackpad, chassis and soldered memory.
- Screen brightness of around 300 nits is adequate indoors and 400 or more is needed near a window, and an IPS or OLED panel beats the TN panels still sold at the bottom of the market.
- The same processor name performs differently in different laptops, because each manufacturer sets a sustained power limit to match the cooling it built.
- Battery hours quoted by manufacturers are optimistic; capacity in watt hours is the comparable number, and laptops sit below the 100 watt hour airline limit.
- How long the machine will receive security updates is its real lifespan, and it is worth checking before the specifications.
Answer four questions before you look at a single model: what is the heaviest thing you will ask it to do, how often will you carry it, how long do you intend to keep it, and does it have to run one specific piece of software. Those answers settle most of the decision. After that, the specifications that change daily life are the screen, the keyboard, the memory, the battery and how long the manufacturer will keep issuing updates. The ones marketing shouts about, processor generation numbers and gigahertz, matter far less than the order of the list suggests.
Start from what you do, not the spec sheet
Almost every bad laptop purchase comes from buying a category rather than a job: a gaming machine bought for spreadsheets, carried at three kilograms with four hours of battery, or an ultralight bought for video editing and then waited on for two years of exports.
Write down the heaviest task you genuinely do weekly, not the one you imagine doing. If the honest answer is a browser with thirty tabs, a video call and a word processor, you need a good screen, a good keyboard and long battery life, and nothing else on the spec sheet will change your day. If it is 4K video or 3D work, memory, storage speed and cooling become the deciding factors and weight has to give way.
Then check for a hard requirement. A specific engineering, accounting or music package that runs on only one operating system, or needs a particular graphics chip, overrides every preference you have. Find that out first rather than after delivery.
The screen is the part you stare at
You will look at this panel for thousands of hours, and a bad one cannot be fixed later. Four things matter.
Brightness, measured in nits. Around 250 to 300 nits is adequate in a normal room. 400 or more is what you want if you sit near a window or work outside, and it is the specification most often quietly low on cheap machines.
Panel type. IPS gives consistent color from an angle and is the sensible baseline. The older TN panels, still found at the bottom of the market, wash out the moment you tilt the lid, and they are a genuine reason to reject a machine. OLED gives deep blacks and excellent contrast, at the cost of some risk of permanent image retention if you leave fixed interface elements on screen for years.
Resolution and aspect ratio. On a 13 or 14 inch screen, 1920 by 1200 is comfortable. Higher resolution looks sharper and costs battery. A taller 16 by 10 or 3 by 2 shape shows noticeably more of a document or a code file than the old 16 by 9 widescreen, and it is worth seeking out.
Color coverage, but only if you need it. If you edit photos or video for other people, treat full sRGB coverage as the minimum. Otherwise ignore this line.
Keyboard, trackpad and build
These resist specification sheets, which is why they deserve your attention in a store. Type a full paragraph, not a few letters. Check whether the keys wobble, whether the layout squeezes the arrow keys or the right hand shift, and whether the deck flexes under your palms.
The trackpad is the part most often ruined to save money. A glass surface with a smooth click beats a plastic one with a stiff hinge every time, and you use it constantly. Press it at the top edge as well as the bottom, since cheap hinges refuse to click there.
Build quality shows up at the hinge and the lid. Open it one handed and see whether the base lifts. Press the back of the lid gently and see whether the image ripples. Aluminum and magnesium chassis stay rigid for years, good engineering plastics can be fine, and a thin unsupported plastic lid is the part that fails first in a bag.
Processor and graphics without the naming maze
Processor names are deliberately hard to compare, and the useful signal is buried in the suffix rather than the headline number. Broadly, chip families split into low power parts designed for thin laptops and long battery life, and higher power parts designed for sustained performance in thicker machines with real cooling. A tier name such as 5, 7 or 9 tells you the position within a family, and a generation number tells you roughly the year. Comparing a tier 7 chip from one family with a tier 5 from another tells you almost nothing.
The more useful and less known fact is that the same chip performs very differently in different laptops. Manufacturers set a sustained power limit to match the cooling they built, so an identical part can run considerably faster in a thicker chassis than in a fanless one. This is why two laptops with the same processor name can differ substantially on long tasks, and why cooling deserves more of your attention than the model number.
Graphics splits cleanly. Integrated graphics share system memory and handle everything except demanding 3D games and heavy GPU computation, including video playback, several external monitors and moderate photo work. A discrete chip adds real capability for gaming, 3D, and the kind of work described in running AI models on your own device, and in exchange adds weight, heat, fan noise and shorter battery life. Buy one because a named task needs it, not because it sounds better.
Memory, storage and what you can change later
Treat memory as permanent unless you have checked otherwise for that exact model, because most thin laptops now solder it. 16 GB is the floor worth accepting for a machine you plan to keep, and the reasoning by workload is set out in how much memory different kinds of work actually need.
Storage is more forgiving. Insist on a solid state drive and reject anything using eMMC flash, which is common on the cheapest machines and is dramatically slower under load. 512 GB is a sane starting point, 256 GB works only if you live in the cloud, and many laptops keep a replaceable drive slot even when the memory is soldered, which makes storage the cheap thing to fix later. Ports, battery, weight and the support window
Ports are a daily friction point. Check that at least one USB-C port supports charging and display output, and count how many you lose when the charger is plugged in. Decide honestly whether you will accept carrying an adapter for HDMI, a memory card or wired ethernet, because many people say yes in the shop and resent it for years.
Battery claims from manufacturers are measured in gentle conditions and are close to fiction for real work. The comparable number is capacity in watt hours, printed in the specifications. Airlines generally cap carry on batteries at 100 watt hours, so laptops cluster below that, and a thin machine often sits near 50. Pair the capacity with the efficiency of the chip and the brightness you actually use, since screen brightness is one of the largest drains.
Weight is underrated. The difference between 1.2 and 1.8 kilograms feels trivial in a shop and decisive on a daily commute.
Finally, ask how long the machine will receive operating system and security updates, because that is its real lifespan and the reason keeping a machine patched eventually becomes impossible. Look for a published support window rather than a promise, and check whether the battery and drive are replaceable and whether service manuals and spare parts are public. France publishes a repairability score on products sold there, and it is a useful signal even if you buy elsewhere. In the store, do five things in ten minutes: type a paragraph, drag a window around the trackpad, tilt the lid to check the panel, look at the screen next to a window, and lift it with one hand. Then check the support window and the memory type online before you pay. When it arrives, set up a backup arrangement that survives a failure before you move your files across, and when the old machine goes, wipe it properly rather than just deleting files.
Common questions
How much should I spend on a laptop?
Work out the minimum specification your heaviest weekly task needs, then buy the best screen, keyboard and support window available at that specification. Buying below what the work requires wastes the whole purchase, while buying far above it mostly adds weight and heat. Because memory is usually soldered, err upward there and save elsewhere.
Is a gaming laptop good for work?
It is capable but poorly suited. Gaming machines have strong processors, generous cooling and discrete graphics, which is useful for video and 3D work. They are also heavy, loud under load, and short on battery life because of the discrete graphics chip. For office work and travel you are carrying a permanent penalty for capability you rarely use.
Do I need a touchscreen on a laptop?
Only if you want to draw, annotate documents by hand, or use it as a tablet in a convertible design. A touchscreen usually adds weight, reflections and battery drain, and most people stop reaching for it within a few weeks. If you are choosing between a touchscreen and a brighter or more accurate panel, take the panel.
How long should a laptop last?
Five to seven years of useful life is reasonable for a well built machine, and the limiting factor is usually the software support window rather than the hardware. Batteries fade after a few hundred full charge cycles and are the most common thing needing replacement. Check before buying whether the battery and drive can be swapped, since that alone can add years.
