The generation column is not evil. Summaries are useful when you are triaging twenty papers to find three worth reading, and a model explanation of a concept you have already tried to grasp can unstick you. The failure is using generation as the default, because the output is always fluent and fluency feels like understanding. Psychologists call that the illusion of knowing: recognizing a correct explanation is much easier than producing one, and only the second is what you are graded on.

Five study methods that actually work

These are specific, repeatable and take a few minutes each.

  1. Explain back. Write your understanding of a topic in your own words, without looking at notes, then paste it in and ask the model to mark it against the source material you also paste in: what is wrong, what is missing, what is imprecise. The writing from memory is the part that does the work.

And ask it to produce a version of a concept at three levels of difficulty so you can find the level where your understanding breaks. What the integrity rules usually say

Academic policies vary by institution and often by individual course, so the only reliable answer is the one on your assignment brief. That said, most policies sort AI use into three bands.

  • Generally allowed: using AI to explain concepts, generate practice questions, check your understanding, plan your revision, and act as a study partner. Nothing you submit came from it.
  • Allowed with disclosure: using it for brainstorming, structural feedback, grammar and language help, or code debugging, with a statement saying what you used and how. Many courses now ask for an AI use statement, and some ask for the prompts.
  • Not allowed: submitting generated text or code as your own, using it in exams and timed assessments, having it write substantive parts of an argument, and generating citations or data.

Three practical points. First, rules differ between two modules on the same degree, so read each brief rather than assuming a policy. Second, if it is unclear, ask the instructor in writing before you submit and keep the reply. AI detectors do not work reliably, and this matters even if you never use AI at all.
